History

African Lioness Mona arrived last November to Safe Haven from a closing roadside zoo in Colorado with over 100 animals in need of new homes.

We constructed a large shift area with a den attached to African Lion Ifaw’s enclosure to slowly introduce them to each other.

African Lions are very social in the wild and we were confident that given enough time to become acquainted, would be a successful introduction. 18-year old Ifaw had lost his enclosure mate Kovu several years ago and Mona had also lost her enclosure mate.

Once we noticed positive signs from their interactions through the enclosure shared wall, we finally allowed Mona access to the main enclosure. It was an immediate and complete success! Both Ifaw and Mona have since become inseparable.
