Taco
HISTORY
Taco and Scooter were once privately owned in Idaho. At the time, their owner was raising 27 different macaws she had rescued over the years, but feared she was in violation with local authorities for having so many birds in a residential area and decided to get them placed with sanctuaries. Safe Haven agreed to accept both macaws for placement so as not to separate the two good friends.
Taco, a blue and gold hybrid with green wings, and Scooter, a blue and gold macaw, are inseparable and very protective of each other. Taco is more vocal than Scooter, and can be heard calling “hello” over and over again when the phone rings. He is the most vocal when staff members are busy doing something he doesn’t like – such as cleaning his cage.
Taco loves constant attention and enrichment. When he is not receiving enough attention, Taco will flip his food bowl over and pound it on the bottom of his cage – kind of like how toddlers throw tantrums.
ABOUT MACAWS
Macaws are very complex birds and are often times quite needy, making them difficult to raise in captivity. They are very social and require a great amount of attention. Macaws can also live to be 70 years old.
